Is 2gb of VRAM Enough for Gaming in 2023?
3D games require a lot of graphical processing power, and that means that you need high-end hardware to run them. If you’re looking to play 3D games on your computer, you’ll probably want a dedicated graphics card with at least 2GB of VRAM (video memory). But how much VRAM will be enough in 2023?
1080p Gaming
After a recent overhaul to the Nintendo Switch's hardware, games are now running at 1080p. However, VR technology is requiring developers to use significantly more resources and render the game at 4K or higher. For example, titles like Assassin's Creed Odyssey or Far Cry 5 already need close to 4GBs of memory. More taxing games like Cyberpunk 2077 will require 8GBs, with future generations of gaming technology needing 16-32 GBs. The short answer is no; 2GBs simply won't be enough for gaming in 2023.
4K 60FPS PC Gaming
4K gaming with a buttery smooth frame rate is now possible with the recent advances in PC hardware. However, running 4K games at 60 FPS (frames per second) requires more GPU power than most cards have. So, what is the minimum amount of VRAM you need to run a high-quality game at 4K and 60 FPS? Well, depending on which benchmarking site you visit, you may see recommendations that vary from 8GBs all the way up to 16GBs. The answer can be found by simply looking at your games’ specs - not just their system requirements but also how much VRAM they use. For example, Far Cry 5 maxes out its VRAM usage around 5GBs while PUBG only uses 1GB. For the majority of gamers who want to play at higher resolutions, including 4K or 1440p, 2 GBs will work fine for some time. We’ll still likely want more RAM if we want higher framerates like 120 or 144 fps, though this does come with other tradeoffs such as reduced visual quality and increased load times.
Virtual Reality Games
Narrowing down what games are going to be future-proof, even before they're released is an impossible task. However, it's safe to say that a lot of Virtual Reality games are going to take advantage of this new graphics card resource. After all, the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive use your PC's GPU and need some serious processing power to work their magic. It's hard to imagine these devices running smoothly without enough video memory. And while not every game will have its graphic settings maxed out at the highest resolution possible, most people don't play at that level on desktops or laptops either. The important thing to remember is that when shopping for a computer today, you'll want to make sure you have the latest generation Nvidia RTX series or AMD RX series - which both come with 8GB of GDDR6X. So if you do get stuck with one of those bad boys, then yes - lower quality graphics might cause some problems.
